AD Chardonnay 2014 Release 1 July
A powerful yet balanced wine combining white peach flavours with toasty
oak and mineral notes. Enjoy this wine on its own or partner with white
meats, salmon and richly flavoured dishes. When Barry joined us
he finished off this wine and Raymond Chan writes that he "kept true to
the style that the Ham family have developed. Mendoza and clone 15 fruit
from select rows, fully barrel-fermented with plenty of lees work, but
minimal MLF. Brilliant straw-yellow, this is tight and refined, smelling
silky, with white florals and white stonefruits, lifted and aromatic,
revealing nutty lees work. The palate combines a rich lusciousness with
steel and cut, the textures very fine. Great linearity and a funky
toasty note on the finish"

Raymond Chan's Five Star Review of The Aviator 2013 - May 2015
"Very full, near saturated black-hued purple-red
colour. This has a very full, voluminous and firmly concentrated nose of ripe
black and dark red berry fruits layered with fragrant spices, tobacco, complex
earth and dried herb notes and exotic, toasty oak. The aromatics blossom
with layers of funky and savoury detail. Full-bodied, the palate features
mouthfilling flavours of ripe dark red and black plum fruit along with
complexing earth, tobacco, game, dried herbs, cassis and undergrowth elements
that unfold in waves of interest. The oaking is powerful, adding toast, spice
and cedar. Firm, but fine-grained tannin structure supports the rich
fruitiness, carrying the wine to a long, fulsome and powerfully packed finish.
This is a fulsome, mouthfilling Cabernet blend with rich, savoury plum fruit
and near funky, earthy complexities along with strong oaking. Serve with
slow-cooked game meat dishes and hard cheeses over the next 10-12+ years. Hand-picked
fruit, a blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot and
18% Malbec from the estate Bridge Pa Triangle vineyard"vineyard, given a
cold soak and fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine spending 18-30 days on skins, basket
pressed and aged a total of 20 months in 75% new French oak. 510 dozen made.

Raymond Chan's Five Star Review of The Navigator 2013 - May 2015
"Very dark, near impenetrable black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is very elegant and refined, with intensely penetrating aromas of ripe blackberry and black plum fruit, unfolding fragrant violet florals, blackcurrants and oak toast. With aeration, blackberry jam and charry oak detail emerges. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly proportioned and tightly bound. Firmly concentrated, but sweet and succulently ripe flavours of blackberries, plums and blackcurrants are guided by fine-grained, supple tannin structure. This has great clarity and focus. The wine flows smoothly, with underlying acid vitality and vibrancy, carrying through to a very long, sweet-fruited, oak-charred finish with freshness and energy. This is an elegant, vibrant and supple Merlot blend with clarity and focussed black fruits. Match with barbecued and roasted red meat dishes over the next 7-8+ years. A blend of 69% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot from the estate Bridge Pa Triangle vineyard, given a cold soak and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 80% French oak, all seasoned. 18.5+/20 Apr 2015"
Raymond Chan reviews First Solo Chardonnay 2013 - April 2015
Raymond Chan is a highly respected wine advisor in the New Zealand wine scene with over two decades of wine judging, retailing and writing experience. Here is his review of our First Solo Chardonnay 2013 dated 28 April 2015
Barry Riwai joins us as our new Head Winemaker
Alpha Domus has announced a
changing of the guard after 10 years, with Kate Galloway passing on the
winemaking reigns to the highly regarded Barry Riwai. Alpha Domus Managing Director
Paul Ham said “Barry’s appointment to replace Kate will see a continuance of her
hard work of making quality wines, but also add a new face to the promotion of
the wineries much acclaimed wines.
“Barry is well known as both
an excellent wine maker and as a wine judge. Our formula of creating
consistently great wines doesn’t change but we have the additional benefit of a
new face, with Barry keen to also be more involved in marketing and promoting
the brand around New Zealand and beyond,” Paul said.
Barry brings with him
strong wine making experience particularly with Chardonnay, having been with
Clearview Winery in Te Awanga, Hawke’s Bay for the last 10 years. Originally from Hamilton, Barry
moved to Hawke’s Bay in 1997 to study viticulture at EIT and he’s looking
forward to being back in the Bridge Pa Triangle wine region. "I’m looking forward to
getting back to this side of Hawke’s Bay, it’s where all the action is with all
the major wine brands in the area.
“Alpha Domus’ reputation for
Syrah and Red Blends is a major draw card for me, as well as moving to a larger
progressive winery and all the challenges this brings. I’m really looking
forward to it. I’ve got a good palate,
backed by good knowledge of Hawke’s Bay wine and an interest in the marketing
side of wines. I have some goals that I want to achieve, which I can do here at
Alpha Domus,” Barry said.
Kate Galloway, who started as
a cellarhand in 2002 before moving to the winemaker role in 2005, is taking a
break from winemaking, but will be watching with keen interest the influence Barry
will have at Alpha Domus. “I’m particularly proud that
we have been able to make consistently high quality wines in years that have
been regarded as great vintages but also in those that have been more
challenging. That’s the difference of
working at a winery like Alpha Domus which has its vines on site. We can monitor
the vineyard closely and make instant decisions as vintage approaches. It’s
more hand-on, and that makes a real difference when it comes to consistency,”
Paul says “Kate has been
instrumental in the ongoing development of high quality single vineyard wines and
the growing list of award winning wines. At the same time, this is a
really exciting time for us. It looks like we have another great vintage on the
way and a new winemaker that’s keen to stamp his mark.”
Cumulus'bubbles' hits high note, twelve years on from first vintage
As they say 'it's been a long time between drinks' but the outcome is expected to be a sell out for the 2012 vintage of Alpha Domus' AD Cumulus Blanc du Blancs Methode Traditionelle. Alpha Domus Managing Director Paul Ham said the single estate winery in Bridge Pa, Hawke's Bay resurrected its hand-made Cumulus "bubbles" twelve years on from its first vintage thanks to a resident French cellar hand in 2012. Julien Aubrey, who had previously worked at some of the leading Champagne houses in France, was a cellarhand at Alpha Domus and offered to assist winemaker Kate Galloway to produce the latest version of Cumulus.
"We always wanted to have another go at making a bubbles and when Julien arrived, the timing was perfect and we're now very excited about what the 2012 Cumulus offers. It's a very special version as the entire creation has been made at the winery. It's never been off-site and to continue its uniqueness, it will only be sold from our cellar door and website.
The AD Cumulus Methode Traditionelle is an elegant dry style, boasts a nice fine bead with subtle aromas of green apple, brioche, hazelnut and a crisp citrus finish.
The latest version of Cumulus is already in hot demand, following a recent sneak tasting preview and early feedback has been very promising. "Those fortunate enough to taste Cumulus, were surprised by the high quality of the bead and the flavor. It was a very popular drinking choice over the weekend. This is the perfect drink for the festive season and will go well on its own, with summer canapés, or to end the evening," Paul said.
Like all Alpha Domus wines, Cumulus looks towards the sky for its name. Alpha Domus wine names have an aeronautical theme, as the winery is close to the Hastings Aerodrome and often has vintage aircraft flying above. Cumulus clouds are also synonymous of the Bridge Pa area and are taken advantage of by local glider planes. Alpha Domus is releasing just 2400 bottles of Cumulus. It is available from the cellar door and our website
for $34.00 per bottle.

Success for Charity Wine Auction
Alpha Domus continued its long-standing support of the
Hawke's Bay Wine Growers Charity Fine Wine Auction by providing a quarter
barrique of our 2013 Syrah. The auction item was hotly contested and fetched $3150,
helping boost the final total raised to over $100,000 for Cranford Hospice. The 2013 Syrah will
age well and the lucky winning bidders can look forward to enjoying the wine
for up to 10 years. We were also a contributor to a unique red wine created from
the wineries within the Bridge Pa Triangle (BPT). The full barrel of blended
red fetched a whopping $8,100.00 and although being a young wine, it is
destined to also age very well.We did manage to get a bottle to try and although it's early days the wine has
great concentration, is very floral and as with wines from the BPTWD it has
fine smooth tannins. The charity auction undertook a new format focused more on
the charity auction. It attracted about 400 people to the Hawke's Bay Racing's
auction is in its 23rd year, and proceeds from fundraiser pushed the total
amount the charity wine auction has raised beyond $2.5 million for Cranford
Award success continues for Alpha Domus and The Barnstormer Syrah
The 2013 Alpha Domus The Barnstormer Syrah has scored a major international accolade with double gold and runner up to the Trophy winner at an invitation-only wine challenge. Alpha Domus managing director Paul Ham today was "ecstatic" with the double gold win in the Shiraz class at the prestigious Six Nations Wine Challenge. The 17 class winners and medalists were announced at an awards celebration in Sydney, Australia last night, with the New Zealand contingency of wines also taking out the overall title of 'Nations of Wine'.
New Zealand's 100 competing wines for the Six Nations Challenge were selected by Bob Campbell MW, taking on 500 wines from Argentina, Australia, Chile, South Africa and the Unites States.
r Ham said the double gold was a major coup for the winery and continued the award success of the single vineyard estate produced The Barnstormer Syrah. "The 2013 vintage is a great wine, so we were pretty excited that it was invited to be part of the New Zealand contingency of wines and then go onto to win a double gold.
"This is the only wine show in the world
where the wines come in exclusively by invitation from the judges, so it's really a double gold celebration for us – firstly by being part of the New Zealand team and then being awarded a double gold medal," Mr Ham said.
The wine is also rated a five star by reputable wine reviewer Raymond Chan who says the wine is "a beautiful example of the superb 2013 Hawke's Bay vintage, and it shows Alpha Domus' flair with the variety."
"The Barnstormer has been produced as a single estate wine from our Bridge Pa Triangle property since 2010 and it's a testament to the site that it keeps producing a top class Syrah," Mr Ham said.
The Barnstormer Syrah is now one of Hawke's Bay's most successful award winners. Earlier this year The Barnstormer Syrah 2012 won the trophy at the Sydney International Wine Whow for Best Medium Dry Red. The 2010 Barnstormer won a Trophy and was awarded Reserve Champion Wine of the show at the 2011 Hawke's Bay A & P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards.
The objective of the Six Nations Show is to discover New World champions and each of the six international judges, one from each of the participating countries, selects 100 wines across the 17 Classes as what they regard as the best in their country.
"Because the wines are selected by each of the judges, the standard of wine quality is higher than any competition of this size in the world," said
Bob Campbell MW.
Mr Ham says the ongoing success of Alpha Domus can be attributed to the continued development of its Bridge Pa property. "As time has gone by we have watched the evolution of wines that have performed well in the Bridge Pa Triangle and we've upgraded the vineyard accordingly," he said.
Mr Ham said the win was a credit to the entire Alpha Domus team, which is headed by himself, vineyard manager Darren Chatterton and winemaker Kate Galloway. The wine is available from selected retailers, restaurants and the Alpha Domus cellar door or by ordering online at www.alphadomus.co.nz
Alpha Domus 'The Barnstormer' Hawke's Bay Syrah 2013
Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date - 1 July 2014
Very dark, deep, purple red colour, this has a ripe and concentrated nose with an array of aromas ranging from ripe, black berry fruit with hints of pepper, spices and subtle violetty floral and mineral notes. On palate, the fruit is luscious and sweetly aromatic from the ripeness, in no way over-ripe, and supported by very fine, ripe tannin extraction. The elegance and perfume is enhanced by the inclusion of fermented Viognier skins, the amount accounting for <0.5%. A beautiful example of the superb 2013 Hawke's Bay vintage, and it shows Alpha Domus' flair with the variety. 18.5+/20 Jun 2014 RRP $32.50
TROPHY Success for 2012 Barnstormer Syrah!
We're delighted to announce that Alpha Domus has been honoured at the Sydney International Wine Competition with the trophy for Best Medium Bodied Dry Red for the 2012 Barnstormer Syrah.
The result comes on the back of a Blue Gold award and selection in the top 100 wines in the show, acclaims that were announced last year.
Out of the 2000 wines judged across all categories this category was again very successful with 38 wines being selected for the Top 100 and Blue Gold awards. This category has long been the domain of Australian wines and this year was no exception taking 35 of the awards along with two Portuguese red wines and in the words of Chief judge Kym Milne "a very stylish example from Hawke's Bay".
The competition is unique amongst the major internationals in that its Award winners have won their award when judged alongside appropriate food. In 2014 this Category was judged alongside Glenella lamb Loin with Rosemary.
The 2012 vintage was a challenging one, so this award marks a particularly outstanding achievement by Vineyard Manager Darren Chatterton and Winemaker Kate Galloway in developing such a special, standout wine.
If you haven't tried it yet, you've got a lot to look forward to, especially if you pair the Barnstormer Syrah with juicy Hawke's Bay lamb, great company, and a cool autumn evening.
The wine is available from selected retailers, the Alpha Domus cellar door (open seven days, 10am – 5pm until June, closed Good Friday, Easter Sunday and ANZAC Day) or by ordering online here
Golden Success for 2012 Barnstormer Syrah
The results of the 33rd Sydney International Wine Competition are out – and the Alpha Domus 2012 Barnstormer Syrah has been included in the Top 100 and awarded a prestigious Blue-Gold medal.
We love this competition because it judges the wines with food, so it's all about the end purpose of the wine. Sounds like a great competition to judge!
Now we look forward to the 8th March when, along with the first tasting of all the 2014 Blue-Gold Award winners, the 2014 Competition's Trophies will be announced at the Awards and Trophies Presentation Banquet.

Vintage Update 2013
You've probably heard the buzz about the fantastic vintage of 2013 from anyone within the wine industry, or anyone who loves great Hawke's Bay wine. Here, Alpha Domus winemaker Kate Galloway explains what made up such a successful growing season for us and many of our fellow wine producers:
The spring of 2012 saw some cold frosty nights which we managed successfully with our frost protection systems. Budburst and early shoot growth was unaffected by these frosts and progressed normally. Once the full growing season got underway, the vines showed even growth and flowering. Fruitset was excellent in most varieties and as a result, high yields were expected. Fruit thinning was undertaken across the majority of the vineyard with added attention paid to our top-end fruit, to ensure an open canopy and good fruit exposure.
Hawke's Bay experienced its driest summer in 50 years with very settled weather throughout the growing season. As a result of this, an official drought was declared. In the vineyard, irrigation management was critical during this time to sustain vine health and fruit quality. The exceptional summer gave us the ideal ripening conditions for all varieties.
Continuing excellent weather during vintage enabled harvest decisions to be based on fruit maturity and concentration of flavor, rather than being dictated by adverse weather events or disease pressure. When the drought finally broke late April, this was timely for establishing a noble botrytis infection in our Semillon destined for dessert wines. This was the icing on top of the cake for us with beautifully raisined fruit coming in at 56 Brix during mid-May.
We're looking forward to presenting our customers and supporters with the wonderful wines of the 2013 vintage, so keep an ear out and we'll let you know when the new releases are ready. Cheers to a fabulous vintage!

Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District Launched
Alpha Domus is one of a group of wine producers responsible for the establishment of the Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District. The promotion of our area as one of the premium wine growing sub-regions in the country is one of the main purposes of the group, we're also excited at the prospect of working together with Hawkes Bay Winegrowers to tell the Hawkes Bay wine story promoting the region for the good of all producers. Establishing the Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District Sub Region in Hawkes Bay is leading the way to evolving the region, clarifying the offer of many different wines from different soils, climate and communities throughout the region.
This is the brainchild of a small group of local winegrowers: Paul Ham (Alpha Domus Winery), Stephen Daysh (Bridge Pa Vineyard), Grant Edmonds (Sileni Estate), Steve Nathan (Salvare Estate) and Peter Cowley (Te Mata Estate). It now includes ten wineries and seven individual grape growers. Our managing director Paul Ham comments that "This area is ideally suited to the production of quality wines, is proven by the awards won. We excel at full flavoured Syrah, Merlot, Red Blends, Chardonnay and Viognier. These wines are characterised by excellent varietal expression, depth of flavor, generosity, and ample fruit sweetness".

Like so many families in Hawke's Bay, we have been touched by the work of this special organisation. We are truly grateful to the team at Cranford for their dedicated care of our beloved matriarch Lea, who passed away early this year.
This year's event will take place at Orton @ Sileni Estates, and features a new format to freshen it up. Rather than the formal dinner or past years, the Charity Wine Auction will this year be a more interactive cocktail style afternoon-into-the-evening affair. Bidders and guests will be able to sample the auction lots and enjoy tapas style food throughout.
The actual auction of lots will be divided into two sessions during the afternoon to allow everyone to taste, share, and watch the bidding led by MC and auctioneer, Chris Tremain MP.
You can also bid online. Why not get a syndicate together and head along to http://www.charitywineauction.co.nz/
? Most of the lots will split up perfectly between a group - especially the Alpha Domus half barrique of Leonara, which can be divided into 300 standard dessert wine 375ml bottles!

2009 Alpha Domus The Aviator
A Proprietary Blend Dry Red Table wine from
Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
Drink 2011 - 2018
Comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon (37%), Merlot (27%), Malbec (18%) and Cabernet Franc (18%), the 2009 The Aviator was matured 16 months in 100% French oak barrels, 75% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, it's intensity scented of warm black currant and black cherry preserves with hints of cedar, grilled bread, spice box and tobacco. Medium-full bodied and generously fruited in the mouth, it has a firm level of chewy tannins, up-lifting acidity and a long finish with the oak jutting out a bit. Give this one another year for the oak to marry and drink it to 2018+.
2010 Alpha Domus The Barnstormer Syrah
A Syrah Dry Red Table wine from
Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
Drink 2011 - 2015
The 2010 The Barnstormer Syrah displays a deep garnet-purple color and aromas of warm cassis and blackberry preserves and hints of mulberries, black pepper, anise and dark chocolate. Medium bodied with a low to medium level of chewy tannins, it offers a decent concentration of youthful berry and black pepper flavors, finishing with good persistence. Approachable now, it should cellar to 2015+.
2007 Alpha Domus The Navigator
A Proprietary Blend Dry Red Table wine from
Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
Drink 2011 - 2015
Blended of 45% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 7% Malbec, the 2077 The Navigator was matured for 20 months in mainly French oak barrels, 30% new. Deep garnet colored, it gives notes of creme de cassis and plum compote with nuances of sandalwood, cloves and spice cake. Medium-full bodied, it has a solid structure of crisp acid and medium-firm chewy tannins fleshed-out by just enough fruit. It finishes with good persistence. Drinking nicely now, it should cellar to 2015+.
2010 Alpha Domus Barrique Fermented Chardonnay
A Chardonnay Dry White Table wine from
Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
Drink 2011 - 2015
The 2010 Barrique Fermented Chardonnay gives a good intensity of warm peach and apple tart aromas with an undercurrent of crushed digestive biscuits, butterscotch and ginger. Full bodied with a creamy texture, it has a nice backbone of very crisp acidity countering the richness. It finishes with very good persistence of honey-nut and stone fruit flavors. Drinking now, it should keep to 2015+.
Best Ever Result for Alpha Domus at Wine Awards
The team at Alpha Domus are celebrating after earlier this week achieving our winery's most successful showing ever at a wine competition. Trophy winners and Supreme Award recipients of the Hawke's Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards were announced at Tuesday night's gala dinner and awards ceremony, and Alpha Domus featured prominently, with three major triumphs:
- 2011 AD Noble Selection
- 2010 Barnstormer Syrah
- 2010 Barnstormer Syrah
Reserve Champion Wine of the Show
We had already received a gold medal for the Alpha Domus The Wingwalker Viognier, silver medal for The Pilot Rosé and three bronze medals after the judging in September.
We're delighted with this success, it is a true reflection of the Viticultural and Winemaking team's uncompromising focus on producing high quality wines.
7 from 7 for AD at Hawke's Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards
Up against 350 local wines at the recent judging for the 2011 Hawke's Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards, all seven of Alpha Domus's entries have won medals, including three gold and one silver. Gold medals were awarded for the 2010 Alpha Domus The Barnstormer Syrah, the 2010 Alpha Domus The Wingwalker Viognier and the 2011 AD Noble Selection. The 2011 The Pilot Rosé won a silver medal. All three of the winery's gold medal-winning wines are now in the running for trophies, which will be announced at An Evening of Recognition & Elegance, the formal dinner and awards ceremony on Tuesday 18 October at Hastings' Waikoko Gardens.
Managing Director, Paul Ham comments that, "Alpha Domus is coming of age with our continued dedication to quality paying off. In these challenging times there is only one way forward and that is to have a single-minded focus on quality. Our whole team is working toward this, and having the winery situated on the vineyard site means we are well placed to work together to achieve the best possible results."
Yvonne Lorkin Rates New Releases
Wine writer Yvonne Lorkin recently enjoyed a vertical tasting of 6 past vintages of AD The Aviator, and gave the newly-released AD The Aviator 2009 five stars.
"It is warming, velvety and long on flavour; it has personality, character and weight that'll carry it through decades to come. Buy now or forever kick yourself." Terrific advice, we agree!
She's also given the 2010 Barnstormer Syrah 4 stars, which compounds very nicely with its recent gold medal at the Hawke's Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards.

AD The Aviator Cuisine Award
Alpha Domus AD The Aviator 2009 has just been awarded 4.5 Stars in Cuisine magazine.
The judges said... "A wine at the more savoury end of cabernet, combining green olive, pepper, blackcurrent, lead pencil and gently sweet oak aromas. Slightly lighter than the biggest 09 Hawkes Bay cabernets, it carries its fruit well in a supple, silky style of excellent lenght."
The Midlands Hawke's Bay Charity Wine Auction
Alpha Domus is proud to be involved in The Midlands Hawke's Bay Charity Wine Auction that was held on Queens Birthday Weekend 4 June 2011.
The successful bid of $2,450 received 6 x 750ml bottles, a Magnum, a Jereboam and a Methuselah of the 2009 AD The Aviator. Produced only when conditions are perfect for this style of wine, the Aviator is the company's flagship red. It is a selection of the best parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec from our estate vineyard. Concentrated flavours of ripe red berryfruit and damson plum combine with cocoa notes and savoury oak. Firm, ripe tannins ensure this wine will age gracefully for many years to come.
